Passing it on

Today we have decided to drag out my old dollhouse. Ever since Jade was born, my husband  and I have been trying to figure out how we will get it from Indiana to Florida for her to play with. It occupied so much of my time as a child, I just know she will love it too.

I remember exactly when I got it. It was the Christmas that I found out Santa didn’t really exist. My brother and I always woke up at the crack of dawn, much to my parents dismay. We would run to check what Santa had brought us before waking our parents.  I still remember the feeling when I saw it for the first time. My mouth must have dropped, maybe I fell on the floor. It was amazing. Santa had a dollhouse built especially for me.

It sat on this enormous table covered with green felt that served as grass and a stone fence with ping pong ball lights on top. No detail left unnoticed. It had a sidewalk and a picnic table. When I walked around to see inside, it was three stories high with electricity. Yes, the lights worked, they even dimmed. It had the most precious furniture….two sets of it.

Before I could even imagine Santa bringing it into the house, my brother blurted out “that’s not from Santa, I saw Dad  and Mom bringing it in last night.”  My childhood crushed in an instant.  At least I still had the dollhouse. I played for hours, days, weeks, months, years with this dollhouse. It has moved 3 times. Unfortunately, it has been in a basement covered with plastic for the last 20 years. So today, when we pulled it out, it was still amazing for me. That feeling came back from that Christmas so many years ago.  I am so glad that I can share this with my daughter. I know that it will need a little updating.  It is 30 years old.

OMG! The house is beautiful! Your story touched my heart. I’m sure your mom is very proud that she kept the house for you and now down through generations.
    I love you all, Jojo

I love reading your stories. This is a really sweet one. There is nothing like sharing our childhood memories with our kids! My mom has saved some of our special things as well. It is priceless! I am sure Jade loves the house and will want to save it for her kids too. Thanks for sharing this!
